THE POUND RIDGE WOMEN'S REPUBLICAN CLUB
Dwight D. Eisenhower was a candidate for President of these United States - the year was 1952.
There was a great deal of enthusiasm about his candidacy and the principles he supported, and a
group of women in Pound Ridge started
The Pound Ridge Women's Republican Club.  The first
President was Mrs. Harry Shackelford, who served from 1952-54.  Fifty-five years later, we are still an
active organization in Pound Ridge and it's environs.

From the early years, the Club has promoted the principles of freedom, equality and justice on which
the government of this country was founded.  It has also encouraged the citizens to vote in the cause of
good government, and to be active and interested in political affairs.  We believe in, support, and
uphold a government based on each person's ability, dignity, freedom and responsibility, which me
honored and recognized, a government fostering free enterprise and the encouragement of individual
initiatives and incentives, as well as a government of sound money management.

A few years after its inception, in 1957, Club members gathered and staged an exhibit of early Pound
Ridge artifacts in the restored Nelson Selleck House and Shop.  Through the years, the Club has been
active in the community, giving and holding many functions, such as debates, panels, luncheons, and
teas, all of which are open to the public.  They feature National, State, County and Tow Officials and
Officeholders.

For many years, the Club has collected toys during the Winter holidays for children of relative in the
Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.  Most recently we have collected for The Marine Corps Reserve Toys
for Tots program.  We are proud and appreciative of the service men and women in all branches of our
country's Armed Forces.  The Toys For Tots program is known for its effectiveness in distributing toys
nationwide.

We encourage women to be interested and active in the political process.  If you would like more
